Every year, Triple J radio station, our radio station that plays new & up-coming music, get the nation to vote on the best tracks that were made that year.
This year, a record 3.21 million people voted.
I love that it’s called a musical democracy.
So, let’s have a look at the collective spirit of that democracy.
I’m on the playlist while mountain bike riding. And I have to skip the depressing songs because… I simply can’t stand it.
And I’m a person that likes sad, emotive songs! On my own, generally, I’ll be listening to emotive music that makes me feel… But this music… Was often just depressing.
Here’s why it impacts me.
My gut twists when I hear toxic lines repeated in my ears because I’m aware that my unconscious mind is always listening.
If I watch the news every day & they say, “Be afraid, be afraid, be afraid!” Eventually, I’d be afraid.
So, what’s different about programming these lyrics & beliefs into our minds?
Look. 👇
‘Stay’ by Justin Beiber & Kid Laroi came in at #2.
The opening lyrics:
“I do the same thing I told you that I never would.
I told you I’d change, even though I knew I never could.
Know that I can’t find no body else as good as you.
I’ll be fucked up if you can’t be right here.”
Makes my freaking skin crawl… And it’s actually such a catchy tune that I’m enjoying it at the same time. This is pop music influence. It’s literally repeating in my mind right now, to tell people I’ll change even though I know I never could.
Ugh, I can taste bile.
‘Good For You’ – by Olivia Rodrigo came in as 4th highest vote in the 100 favourite songs in this country.
It has to be the most spitefully written song I’ve ever heard:
“Good for you, you look happy & heathy, not me, if you ever cared to ask.
Good for you, you’re doing great out there without me, baby, like a damn sociopath.”
It’s literally a song she’s singing to her ex about how unhappy she is that they broke up. The entire tone is bitter & it’s the 4th highest rated song in this country!
Which means it’s in people’s minds that highly to be mad & spiteful towards their ex that this is the song that resonates for them.
It’s literally quantifiable by the numbers. Millions of people voted for it.
‘Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish is 5th.
Now, I freaking love Billie.
This song, guys, has to be the most depressing freaking song I’ve ever heard from her. Actually, this entire album is a massive red flag for suicidal behaviour & I hope she’s got a solid support network around her.
“When I’m away from you, I’m happier than ever.”
“Don’t say it isn’t fair, you clearly weren’t aware, you made me miserable.
“Never paid any mind to my mother or friends, so I shut em all out for you coz I was a kid,
You ruined everything good,
Always said you were misunderstood,
Made all my moments your own,
Just fucking leave me alone.”
I love that she acknowledges that she was a kid that shut her family out for the sake of a toxic relationship. Anyone reading this or really relating to this song & vibing it… Get out of that relationship, & find yourself.
Just choose.
There’s a massive pedestal that social media & films have put on being in a relationship being BETTER than being single.
In relationship = Life is complete.
Single = I still haven’t figured my life out.
If we could all scrape that dogma away right now, it’d be great. It may take some work though.
Picture the fact that 90% of films you’ve seen, the protagonist is lost… And then in the end gets the girl, or the guy, or gets married.
It’s unconsciously planted, which means it must be removed unconsciously.
I don’t like using the term ‘toxic.’
I’ve never said it on a status because I highly avoid words that are over-used & thrown around until they lose their meaning.
People blaming each other for being toxic is… Ironically a toxic behaviour. 😊
So I rarely comment on it.
In this moment though, I warn you all that there’s toxic programmes filling your day to day life if you’re listening to pop-cultural music & TV ‘programmes.’
Especially if you’re in a state of trance while being programmed. Often you’re in trance while driving, while doing something you can do without concentrating, or when you’re sleepy.
I have a question to uplift this all:
What do you do to programme good thoughts into your mind?
(In the comments, answer that question. I truly won’t bother reading comments with boasts of, ‘I stopped listening to radio & watching TV 5 years ago, & anyone that still does consume it is a sheep.’ Just shoosh. Simply tell me what you do to programme gratitude, & creative thinking into your life).
Now get out there, you loving beings.
You’re all worthy of love & bliss.
Remember to programme love & bliss.
